The study “Alternanthera philoxeroides (AP) mitigates age-related depression in mice through regulation of oxidative stress and neurogenic mechanisms” investigated the potential of the medicinal plant Alternanthera philoxeroides to alleviate age-related depression, using an animal model combined with biochemical analyses and advanced metabolomics technologies.
The study found that the plant extract reduced oxidative stress, rebalanced stress hormones and promoted neurogenesis, all of which contributed significantly to alleviating depressive behavior in the animal model. In addition, metabolic pathway analysis using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR)–based metabolomics clearly elucidated the molecular mechanisms involved in neurotransmitter synthesis and cellular energy production.
The study highlights the role of NMR Metabolomics technology in opening new perspectives in biomedical research. Metabolite analysis using the NMR instrument at the National Phenome Institute, Khon Kaen University, supports a deeper understanding of the biomolecular mechanisms of disease and builds knowledge that may lead to future technologies and treatments.
The National Phenome Institute, Khon Kaen University, congratulates the team on the success of this research, which reflects the strength of the institute's research infrastructure and academic collaborations dedicated to generating new knowledge that drives health innovation nationally and internationally.
