About the institute

What is the National Phenome Institute (NPI)?

The National Phenome Institute (NPI) is a research institute of Khon Kaen University, Thailand, working in phenomics and bioinformatics. It combines research, molecular analytical services and workforce development, with the goal of becoming a global hub for phenomics and bioinformatics.

Where is the National Phenome Institute located?

The National Phenome Institute is located at KKU Science Park (Room 409), 123 Kallaprapruek Road, Mueang Khon Kaen District, Khon Kaen 40002, Thailand.

Which university is NPI part of, and who is its director?

The National Phenome Institute is part of Khon Kaen University. Its director is Asst.Prof. Jutarop Phetcharaburanin, supported by deputy and assistant directors covering analytical services, research, brainpower development and business cooperation.

What is phenomics?

Phenomics is the systematic, large-scale study of an organism’s phenotype - measuring biomolecules such as metabolites, proteins and microbiota alongside genetic and environmental data. NPI applies this approach to biomarker discovery and precision medicine.

Services & instruments

What services does the National Phenome Institute provide?

NPI provides five main service groups: genomic and pathogen analysis (including tumour gene panels and microbiome health assessment); metabolomics (global and targeted profiling, amino acids, short-chain fatty acids); functional testing such as drug sensitivity testing of patient-derived tumour organoids; quality testing for food, nutrition and microbiome-based products; and bioinformatics analysis and data interpretation.

What analytical instruments does NPI operate?

NPI operates a 600 MHz NMR spectrometer for quantitative metabolomics, UHPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS for high-resolution untargeted and targeted metabolomics, a Bruker EVOQ GC-TQ triple quadrupole GC-MS/MS for volatile metabolites, and Oxford Nanopore long-read sequencers (MinION Mk1C and PromethION 2 Solo).

What sample types does NPI accept?

NPI accepts clinical specimens (such as blood, urine, stool and tissue), food and supplement products, agricultural samples and environmental samples. Preparation and volume requirements depend on the technique chosen, so a consultation before shipping samples is recommended.
